Branch News Update - June 2013

'Campaign Blitz' hits the mark

Feedback on this weekends local 'campaign blitz', aimed to rally support for Labor, has been described as 'overwhelmingly positive'. Annerley Branch members helped staff information stalls across the suburbs of Annerley, Tarragindi, Moorooka, Salisbury and Sherwood, with the reaction from residents reported as very 'upbeat and optimistic'.

Encouraged by the increase in support for the ALP and new Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, volunteers were out in force, eager to talk with local residents about Labor's policies relating to 'Better Schools', the National Disability Insurance Scheme, superannuation, and the National Broadband Network.

The local campaign for both Griffith (held by Kevin Rudd) and Moreton (held by Graham Perrett) is expected to escalate over the next few weeks. People wishing to volunteer, can email info@annerleylabor.org

Graham Perrett fights LNPs 'Sardine City'

Moreton MP, Graham Perrett is continuing with his community campaign against the LNP's proposed city plan. Dubbed 'sardine city' by its critics, the Brisbane City Council's proposed changes to town planning laws will see residents stripped of their right to have  any say regarding developments in their street.

To help raise awareness of the drastic changes, Graham Perrett is conducting information forums across the Moreton electorate. A forum held recently in Moorooka (pictured) saw over 200 concerned residents express their anger at the proposed city plan, with many deeply concerned that there had been very little public consultation or information. Residents were also bemused by the decision to allow small lot developments of 180 square metres with very tiny 6 metre frontages.

Graham has organised an online petition and further community events to highlight how the changes will adversely affect our local lifestyle. To support Graham's petition against the LNP's new city plan visit - http://alturl.com/yjj8m

Branch holds another successful Book Drive

This years annual book drive - aimed to assist the Annerley Community Bookshop - has been hailed as 'another success', by Branch president and Yeerongpilly ALP spokesperson, Cam Crowther. The book drive, a project organised each year by the Annerley Branch, saw over one hundred books donated by members, the proceeds of which will help fund the Bookshops valuable community programs.

On hand to receive this years haul was Bookshop president Naomi Frampton (pictured with Cam Crowther).

Kevin Rudd congratulated on marriage equality stance

The Annerley Branch has formally expressed its appreciation to Kevin Rudd on his changed stance on marriage equality, unanimously passing a resolution to commend him on his support for the 'overdue reform'.

On the 20th May this year, Mr Rudd issued a public statement outlining reasons for changing his view on the matter, commenting that he had 'come to the conclusion that church and state can have different positions and practices on the question of same sex marriage'.

The Branch, which has called on all Labor MPs to support marriage equality, has in the past congratulated Moreton MP Graham Perrett for his own strong advocacy on the issue. Accordingly, Branch members were only too eager to express their support for Mr Rudd's newly adopted position.
