Branch honours Gough Whitlam

Members have unanimously adopted a motion of condolence to record their appreciation for the enormous and enduring legacy left by former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam who passed away recently.

 

The resolution outlined many of the key achievements of the Whitlam Labor Government and expressed 'deep appreciation' for the vision and passion that Gough had for a more enlightened, socially-just Australia.

 

Members used the opportunity to outline why they found Gough such an inspiring leader, with many citing his policies as reasons for joining the Australian Labor Party.  Indeed, the Whitlam Government is still seen by many progressive Australians as an example of how governments can play a positive role in building a fairer society.

Members 'paint the state red'

Branch members and ALP supporters gathered together on the night of the 29th November to help cheer on the Victorian Labor Party as it took back government after just one term in Opposition.

Part of a joint fundraising event for the South Brisbane and Yeerongpilly campaigns, called the Paint the State Red Cocktail Evening, the night was a good reminder to members that hard work and good policies can result in one term conservative governments.

 

Speaking at the event, Jackie Trad MP, Member for South Brisbane and Mark Bailey, ALP candidate for Yeerongpilly, both rallied members and supporters about what could be achieved in Queensland at next years state election.

 

Jackie and Mark also used the evening to attest to the strong local community spirit that had been demonstrated in the wake of the devastating storm that hit the south-side just a few days before. "It was great to see so many people - including our 'Labor community' - come out and help each other", Jackie Trad told the crowd.

 

The Queensland state election is due in March 2015, with several polls predicting a very tight race.

 

Christmas Hamper appeal launched

The Annerley Branch is once again calling for donations of non-perishable food items for its annual Christmas Hamper appeal. The Hamper, which will be donated to Micah Projects, is part of the ongoing community program that the Branch administers and helps families and people in need during Christmas time.
