Branch News Update - December 2011

Members condemn PM's move on uranium

The December general meeting of the Annerley Branch has unanimously condemned the recent decision of the ALP National Conference to allow the sale of uranium to India. The resolution was passed in response to Prime Minister Gillard's desire to see India exempted from existing ALP policy that prohibits the sale of Australian uranium to any nation that has not signed the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

Members articulated their concern that the Labor Party Conference, dominated by the Right-wing, had endorsed the policy without any regard to rank and file opposition to the proposed exemption.

The Annerley Branch resolution, which will be conveyed to the Federal Resources Minister, expressed concern that the new policy would 'undermine the existing international framework' which relies on a 'multi-lateral approach' to the governance of nuclear technologies.

ALP National Conference dubbed a 'failure'

Branch members have declared the 2011 ALP National Conference, held in Sydney, 'an abject failure' due to its lack of action in dealing with the urgent matter of organisational reform. The recent Conference was discussed in depth at the December general meeting, with members keen to ensure that the issue of reform becomes a constant course of action for the Annerley Branch.

In noting its 'deep disappointment' at the failure of the Conference, the Branch has agreed to 'continue to promote the ongoing and continuous need for reform' and will seek to work within various channels to ensure that 'necessary changes are achieved'.

It is expected that the member-based organisation - Labor Renewal - will be maintaining its campaign to reform the decision making processes of the ALP.

Members wind up year with Christmas BBQ

Simon & members at Christmas BBQ
Members of several local branches recently signed off to 2011 by celebrating at an annual Christmas BBQ, held at the Sandy Creek Park in Tarragindi (pictured). The BBQ, hosted by State MP, Simon Finn, was well attended with many members keen to unwind after a tough year.

Simon thanked Branch members for their hard work, support and dedication through-out 2011, commenting that although next year's election would be hard fought, he was confident that Yeerongpilly voters realised that 'only Labor could deliver locally'.

  1. Gillard has really failed to deliver on reform. Maybe she needs to be replaced?
