Branch News Update - February 2011

Calls for peaceful transition in Egypt;
Socialist International to play 'positive role'

The Annerley Branch has called on the National ALP to insist that the Socialist International play a more positive role in encouraging its affiliated members, where in government, 'to implement and foster a genuinely democratic, transparent and accountable political system'.

The position of the Branch was adopted unanimously as the ruling party in Egypt - the National Democratic Party - was, until only recently, a fully affiliated member of the Socialist International.

Importantly, the resolution also called for a peaceful transition to an 'open and democratic administration' in Egypt, as the only possible means for achieving a stable future.

The resolution has been conveyed to the ALP's International Secretary, Senator Michael Forshaw and Foreign Minister, Hon Kevin Rudd MP. Details of the resolution, and other recently adopted motions, can be found at http://alturl.com/ou2w4

Annerley demands restoration of 10% membership discount

The February general meeting of the Annerley Branch has called on the State's administrative committee to restore the full 10% discount for early membership renewals. Members at the meeting expressed their concern that the discount had been scaled back to just 5%.

The resolution calling for the restoration of the popular 10% discount was passed unanimously and has been conveyed to the State Secretary for a response.
