Branch News Update - December 2012

Merry Christmas and a Happy 2013

On behalf of everyone in the Annerley Branch, we hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas and a very happy, prosperous and safe 2013.

We look forward to seeing everyone in the New Year!

Members spread some Christmas cheer

The Annerley Branch was proud to hand over a variety of donated items to Micah Projects recently in response to their annual Christmas appeal. Branch members responded enthusiastically to the call for hamper goods with a wide assortment of food items collected.

Each year, Micah Projects organises a Christmas appeal aimed at helping those individuals and families experiencing social isolation and poverty during the festive season. Their food hampers are delivered on Christmas Eve by volunteers who selflessly give up their time to help others in our community.

In addition, toys and books collected as part of the Annerley Branch Christmas Hamper were donated to the Sandlewood Op-Shop, which is located on Beaudesert Rd, Moorooka. The Op-Shop is well known for its work helping the local homeless and disadvantaged families.

Branch welcomes UN vote on Palestine

The recent United Nations (UN) General Assembly vote upgrading Palestine to the status of a 'non-member observer state' was unanimously welcomed by the Annerley Branch at its December general meeting.  The vote by the General Assembly was carried 138 votes to 9, with 41 countries abstaining, which included Australia.

Although dismayed that the Australian Government was unable to vote in favour of the UN resolution, members were pleased that a potential no vote was changed to an abstention through the intense lobbying efforts of many in the Federal Labor Caucus.

The Branch resolution welcoming the historic UN vote will be conveyed to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon Bob Carr.
