Branch Round Up - June 2009

The Annerley Branch has indicated overwhelming support for the current Essential Services campaign of the Commonwealth Public Sector Union (CPSU).
The union campaign aims to lobby the Federal Government about the need to ensure that it protects public sector jobs, guarantee pay equity, and review current Australian public sector job classifications.
Importantly, the campaign recognises the key role many public sector employees play in providing essential services to the community and the need to ensure that these workers are properly remunerated.

On another front, the Branch recently discussed the 2009 federal and state budgets.
Noting the increase in funding for the federal defence budget, the Branch resolved to voice its concern over the growing imbalance between ‘offensive’ funding and that of peace-keeping.
Additionally, the Branch also resolved to oppose the asset privatisation measures announced by the Bligh Government as part of its 2009 budget.

John Lincolne has been re-appointed as Branch Auditor. John’s role is to ensure that the Branch finances are properly spent and that the Branch is compliant with the Rules of the ALP.

The annual book-drive was organised recently with a record number books donated by Branch members and supporters.
Now a regular feature of the Branch calendar, the book-drive aims to support the local non profit bookshop based in Annerley. Donated books are re-sold to the community at a very affordable price, giving locals access to a wide variety of reading materials.
Rod Beisel was on hand this year to officially present the bookshop with the donated books.
